Signs of Storm Damage You Shouldn't Ignore
September 10, 2026
After a windstorm or heavy weather passes through, it's easy to assume your roof is fine if nothing looks obviously wrong from the driveway. But some of the most serious roof damage isn't visible from ground level, and waiting too long to check can turn a simple repair into a bigger problem.
Missing or lifted shingles/tiles. Wind doesn't always tear materials completely off; sometimes it just loosens them enough to let water in underneath, which isn't always visible unless you're up on the roof.
Granule buildup in gutters. For asphalt shingle roofs, finding a noticeable amount of granules in your gutters after a storm can be an early sign of surface wear or impact damage.
Exposed or torn underlayment. If shingles or tiles have been torn away entirely, the layer beneath them, the underlayment, may be exposed directly to the weather. This is the point where water intrusion becomes a real risk, and it's also exactly the kind of damage emergency tarping is meant to prevent while a permanent repair is arranged.
Interior water stains after a storm, not before. A ceiling stain that shows up shortly after a storm, even a small one, is worth having checked; it often points to a new opening in the roof rather than an old, slow leak.
Debris impact marks. Fallen branches or debris can crack tiles or dent shingles without fully removing them, which can be easy to miss without a close inspection.
If you're seeing any of these signs, or just want to be sure after a storm, a free inspection with photo documentation is the fastest way to know whether you're looking at a quick repair or something more urgent. If there's an active leak or exposed roof area, emergency tarping is available while a permanent fix is arranged.
